ISO 14001:2026 Transition at a glance
The PECB ISO 14001:2026 Transition course costs A$427 + GST as Self-Study, with the official exam, one free retake and the certification application fee included. It teaches what changed between ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 14001:2026 and how to plan those changes in an existing environmental management system (EMS). Aegentra Academy is an official PECB authorised training partner.
When was ISO 14001:2026 published?
ISO 14001:2026 was published on 15 April 2026, according to PECB and UKAS. It replaces ISO 14001:2015 including Amendment 1:2024. PECB published the Transition course and exam in English on 7 May 2026 and in French on 30 July 2026. Global ACI says "the overall changes to the document are minimal" and puts the number of accredited ISO 14001 certificates at approximately 700,000.
Minimal does not mean nothing to do. ISO 14001 carries more changes UKAS rates as significant than ISO 9001 does, mostly in Clauses 4, 6 and 8.
ISO 14001:2015 compared with ISO 14001:2026, clause by clause
The rating column is UKAS’s own, from Appendix A of its gap analysis (Issue 1, 7 May 2026). The key changes follow Global ACI’s transition document and PECB’s course description.
Unchanged: 4.4, 5.1, 6.2.2, 7.1, 7.3, 7.4.2, 7.4.3, 7.5, 9.2.1 and 10.2.
The two new clauses: 6.1.4 Risks and opportunities and 6.3 Planning of changes
Risks and opportunities move out of 6.1.1 into their own clause, 6.1.4, and the old planning-action clause becomes 6.1.5. PECB describes this as "the revised planning logic for risks and opportunities". Clause 6.3 Planning of changes did not exist in ISO 14001:2015. PECB calls it "the newly formalized approach to managing change". Both are rated significant by UKAS, so both are where an auditor will look first.
Climate change, biodiversity and resource scarcity in Clause 4
PECB says the 2026 edition puts an "increased focus on broader environmental conditions, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource scarcity, when analyzing the organizational context". Climate change was already in Clause 4.1 through Amendment 1:2024. Biodiversity loss and resource scarcity are the newer prompts. UKAS also rates the changes to interested parties (4.2) and scope (4.3) as significant.
Life-cycle perspective and operational control (6.1.2 and 8.1)
The 2026 edition reinforces the life-cycle perspective when you identify environmental aspects, and UKAS rates the revision of 8.1 Operational planning and control as significant. If your aspects register stops at your own site boundary, or your controls over outsourced processes are thin, this is where the transition work sits.
What is the ISO 14001:2026 transition deadline?
Global ACI’s mandatory transition document (TECH-3-TR, issued 4 September 2026) sets a three-year transition ending on 30 April 2029. UKAS gives its certification bodies until 30 April 2029 to transition their certified customers.
The ISO 14001 cut-off for new 2015 certificates, 31 October 2027, comes five months before the ISO 9001 cut-off of 31 March 2028. If you run an integrated system, plan the ISO 14001 transition first; the ISO 9001:2026 Transition covers the quality side. We have not been able to read a separate notice from JAS-ANZ, so confirm with your certification body how it applies these dates. Some other published dates (15 April 2029, end of May 2029) do not match Global ACI’s document.
Do I need this if I already hold a PECB ISO 14001 credential?
PECB’s answer, quoted from its ISO 14001:2026 Transition brochure:
"The new updates do not have an impact on your existing certification against ISO 14001 standard. If you have a valid ISO 14001 Implementer, Lead Implementer, Senior Lead Implementer or an ISO 14001 Auditor, Lead Auditor, or Senior Lead Auditor, you just need to maintain these certifications active by submitting CPDs and AMFs. However, we encourage certified individuals to take the ISO 14001:2026 Transition course and exam, to update their knowledge, and report the course and exam as continuous professional development (CPDs) credits, as per the CPD Policy."
PECB adds that ISO 14001 Foundation and Provisional Implementer or Provisional Auditor certificates need no maintenance and are not affected by the update.
Passed a 2015-edition ISO 14001 exam but not yet applied?
This is the group with a hard deadline. PECB says candidates who passed an ISO 14001 exam based on the 2015 edition "can apply for certification until April 15, 2027, at the latest". After that date, candidates who want to apply "will have to take the ISO 14001:2026 Transition exam, and the regular fee applies".
PECB’s transition brochure also records that it published updated ISO 14001 Lead Implementer (13 May 2026) and ISO 14001 Lead Auditor (14 May 2026) courses and exams in English, alongside the updated Foundation course.
What the ISO 14001:2026 Transition course covers
PECB’s learning objectives are to explain the differences between ISO 14001:2026 and ISO 14001:2015, interpret the new concepts, requirements and recommendations of ISO 14001:2026, and plan and implement the changes an existing EMS needs to conform to the 2026 edition. PECB names four themes: broader environmental conditions in the organisational context, the reinforced life-cycle perspective, the new clause 6.3 and the revised planning logic for risks and opportunities.
The PECB ISO 14001:2026 Transition exam
One hour, 40 multiple-choice questions, closed book, online or on paper, in English or French. It covers two domains: the differences between the main clauses of ISO 14001:2026 and ISO 14001:2015, and understanding, planning and implementing the 2026 changes. Online multiple-choice results are shown straight away, and a failed attempt is followed by a 15-day wait before the free retake. PECB does not publish a pass mark for this exam, so we do not state one; Academy@aegentra.com.au can confirm it with PECB.
Which credential do you get?
Passing allows you to apply for the PECB Certified ISO 14001:2026 Transition credential. PECB requires no professional experience and no EMS project experience, only signing the PECB Code of Ethics, and lists Transition credentials as needing no maintenance.
How the course helps you
- It closes the 15 April 2027 gap. If you passed a 2015-edition exam and have not applied, the Transition exam is PECB’s route after that date.
- It counts as CPD for current credential holders. PECB encourages Lead Implementers and Lead Auditors to take it and report it as CPD.
- It maps the work. The changes UKAS rates as significant sit in Clauses 4, 6, 8 and 10, and the course walks each one.
- It is short and costs nothing to keep. Two days on PECB’s agenda, a one-hour exam, no prerequisites and no maintenance fee.
Transition course or a full ISO 14001 course?
The Transition course is for people updating an existing EMS or existing ISO 14001 knowledge. New to the standard? Start with ISO 14001 Foundation. Building an EMS calls for ISO 14001 Lead Implementer; auditing one calls for ISO 14001 Lead Auditor. For organisational certification in Australia, read the ISO 14001 certification guide.
