This is where ISO 50001 diverges from most PECB schemes, and it catches people out. The exam is not multiple choice. It is 12 essay-type questions worth 75 points in total, open book, over 3 hours, with a 70% pass mark. You write your answers out. PECB’s candidate handbook publishes how the 12 questions are distributed across the seven competency domains:

Read that table as a study plan. A third of the available points sit in one domain — the requirements themselves — and three of the seven domains are worth five points each. Spreading preparation evenly across seven headings is the most common way to under-prepare for this paper.
Harder to prepare for than a multiple-choice paper, and for a specific reason: open book plus essay format means recognition is worthless. In a multiple-choice exam the correct answer is on the page and you only have to identify it. Here you must produce it, in writing, under time, with the standard open in front of you and no credit for having seen the phrase before. Candidates who fail usually fail on time rather than knowledge — 12 written answers in 180 minutes is roughly 15 minutes each, and the point weighting says the 25-point domain deserves considerably more than that while the 5-point ones deserve less.
Effective exam preparation is to practise writing, not reading. Take a requirement, close the material, and write the answer out longhand. Any practice test or mock exam you sit should be sat under the real time limit; open-book exams punish disorganised material more than thin knowledge, so know where things are in the 450 pages before exam day.
Budget 35 to 45 hours across the 450+ pages — the course is the self-paced equivalent of five classroom days, but spread over whatever schedule you can hold. Most people working full time land somewhere between four and eight weeks. You keep myPECB access for 12 months, and the exam voucher does not expire the moment you finish reading, so there is no penalty for pacing it around a real workload. Sit the exam when the writing practice feels comfortable rather than when the reading is finished.

Yes. You can hold both the ISO 50001 Lead Implementer and ISO 50001 Lead Auditor credentials. They are separate, complementary certifications: Lead Implementer develops implementation knowledge, while Lead Auditor develops audit knowledge. To pursue both, complete each course, pass each exam, and apply for each credential. PECB assesses implementation-project experience for the Implementer tier and audit experience for the Auditor tier separately. If you pass an exam before meeting the full experience requirements, you may apply for the applicable Provisional credential and later request an upgrade. PECB evaluates each upgrade application and may determine whether an examination is required. Neither credential automatically grants the other.
