ISO 9001:2015 is the international standard for quality management systems (QMS) and the most certified management standard in the world. In Australia it is the certificate government tenders, construction prequalification schemes, and enterprise supplier panels ask for — and PECB training for the people who build and audit those systems starts at $780 + GST through Aegentra.
ISO 9001 sets requirements for how an organisation plans, delivers, monitors, and improves its products and services. The requirements sit in Clauses 4 to 10: organisational context, leadership, planning (risks and opportunities, quality objectives), support, operation, performance evaluation, and improvement. Its Annex SL clause skeleton is the template every modern management system standard follows, including ISO 27001 for information security — quality management is the discipline the others borrowed their structure from.
No Australian law mandates ISO 9001, but Australian buying does. Federal and state tender evaluations award weighted points for a certified QMS, head contractors require it from subcontractors at prequalification, defence primes check it before supply-chain entry (AS 9100 builds on it), and enterprise vendor onboarding shortcuts due diligence for certified suppliers. Construction and manufacturing firms commonly hold the ISO 9001 + ISO 14001 + ISO 45001 triple certification as one integrated management system because the same tenders ask for all three.
Two different things get certified. A company certifies its QMS through a JAS-ANZ-accredited certification body via a Stage 1 / Stage 2 audit — that produces the certificate tenders ask for. An individual earns a personal credential such as PECB Certified ISO 9001 Lead Implementer through training and an exam — that qualifies you to build or audit the system. PECB credentials are accredited by ANAB under ANSI/ASTM E2659-24 and recognised internationally.
ISO 9001 Foundation (from $780 + GST, 10–15 hours, 14 CPD credits) covers quality concepts and the Clause 4–10 requirements for newcomers and quality team members. ISO 9001 Lead Implementer (from $1,290 + GST, 35–45 hours, 31 CPD credits) trains quality managers and consultants to build and run a QMS using PECB's IMS2 methodology. ISO 9001 Lead Auditor (from $1,290 + GST, 35–45 hours, 31 CPD credits) trains auditors to assess a QMS under ISO 19011 and ISO/IEC 17021-1. Foundation: one hour, multiple-choice, two competency domains, 70% pass mark. Lead Implementer and Lead Auditor: three hours, open-book, mixed multiple-choice and scenario-based questions across seven competency domains, 70% pass mark. All exams are remotely proctored, so you can sit them from anywhere in Australia.
Foundation confers PECB Certificate Holder status with no experience required. The Lead schemes tier by attested experience: Provisional requires none; Implementer/Auditor requires two years of experience (one in quality management) plus 200 hours of project or audit activity; Lead requires five years (two in quality management) plus 300 hours; Senior Lead requires ten years (seven in quality management) plus 1,000 hours. All tiers require signing the PECB Code of Ethics, and you can upgrade as hours accrue.
An Australian SMB of 10–50 staff typically needs 10–14 weeks of readiness — gap analysis, process mapping, QMS design, internal audit, management review — followed by the Stage 1 / Stage 2 audit. Typical costs: readiness $15,000–$40,000, Stage 1 + Stage 2 audit $8,000–$18,000, annual surveillance from $2,500, and re-certification in year three $7,000–$15,000.
