What is on the ISO 42001 Foundation exam?

PECB does not publish a candidate handbook for the ISO/IEC 42001 Foundation examination, and Aegentra does not invent one. What is published is the credential itself: passing makes you a PECB Certificate Holder in ISO/IEC 42001 Foundation, and no professional experience is required to sit it.

Be careful comparing figures across providers here, because several quote exam specifications that belong to entirely different schemes — question counts and durations vary between certification bodies for the same standard. If an exam detail matters to your planning, ask the provider which scheme the figure comes from.

Do you need ISO 27001 before ISO 42001?

No. ISO/IEC 42001 is a management system standard in its own right and can be implemented and certified independently. In practice most Australian organisations meet it second, because they already run an ISO 27001 ISMS and an AIMS shares the same Annex SL structure — context, leadership, planning, support, operation, evaluation, improvement — so the clauses line up almost one to one.

What ISO 42001 adds is everything specific to AI: impact assessment on people and society, data and model governance across the AI lifecycle, transparency obligations, and its own Annex A controls. If you already hold ISO 27001, Foundation is the fastest way to see exactly where the two meet — the ISO 27001 Foundation course covers the other side.

Foundation certifies you, not your organisation. Certifying a company to ISO/IEC 42001 is a separate project — the ISO 42001 certification guide for Australia covers what that costs and how long it takes. Ready to go further? Lead Implementer builds the AIMS; Lead Auditor audits one.

Free ISO 42001 documents to study alongside the course

Foundation teaches the clause structure and what an AI management system is for. Seeing those ideas applied to a real organisation is the fastest way to make them stick, so we publish the working documents in full and free — no email required.

  • Statement of Applicability (CSV) or PDF — all 38 Annex A controls across the nine themes, each with an applicability decision and a written justification. The clearest way to see what the standard actually asks for.
  • Voluntary AI Safety Standard mapped to ISO 42001 (CSV) or PDF — all 10 Australian guardrails with the ISO/IEC 42001 clause that satisfies each. The clearest single view of how the standard and Australian AI policy fit together.
  • AI system inventory (CSV) or PDF — eight worked AI systems with purpose, data, risk tier and owner. Read this first — an AI inventory is where every AIMS actually starts.
  • AI system impact assessment (CSV) or PDF — twelve sections worked through for a résumé screening assistant. Read it to see what Clause 8.4 asks for in practice, rather than in the abstract.

What makes ISO 42001 different from ISO 27001?

Both follow the Annex SL structure, so clauses 4 to 10 line up almost one to one — context, leadership, planning, support, operation, evaluation, improvement. If you already know ISO 27001, half of ISO 42001 is familiar the moment you open it.

What is new sits in Annex A, which defines 38 controls across territory an information security standard never had to cover: AI impact assessment, data quality and provenance across the AI lifecycle, third-party AI provider management, human oversight, and transparency to the people an AI system affects.

The single biggest conceptual jump is Clause 8.4, the AI system impact assessment. ISO 27001 asks what could harm the organisation. ISO 42001 also asks what the organisation's AI could do to individuals, groups and society — a different question, pointing outward instead of inward. Newcomers from a security background conflate it with risk assessment more often than any other part of the standard. ISO/IEC 42005 gives detailed guidance on conducting one and ISO/IEC 23894 covers AI risk management; neither is certifiable, but both are worth knowing by name.

Every ISO 42001 course Aegentra Academy sells is official PECB certification training, and the ISO 42001 exam voucher is included in the course price rather than billed separately — course and exam together. Prices are in Australian dollars, ex-GST, with the tax invoice issued at checkout.

As an ISO 27001 practitioner, how much of ISO 42001 is new to me?

Roughly half. Clauses 4 to 10 follow the same Annex SL structure you already know, so the management system half will feel familiar the moment you open the standard. What is new is Annex A — 38 controls covering AI impact assessment, data provenance across the AI lifecycle, human oversight and transparency — plus Clause 8.4, which has no ISO 27001 equivalent at all.

Foundation is the fastest way to see exactly where the two meet, and most people with an ISO 27001 background finish it in well under the 8–12 hours quoted.

As someone with no AI background, can I do this course?

Yes. There is no prerequisite and no technical requirement — you do not need to build or understand models. ISO 42001 is a governance standard, so the work is inventory, assessment, accountability and evidence. What you need is enough understanding of how AI systems behave to ask what evidence should exist, and that is what the course teaches.

/ Before you enrol

Clear answers about price, tax, exams, and certification.

These answers use this course's current catalogue record and PECB's published exam, certification, and maintenance policies.

What is included in the ISO 42001 Foundation course fee?

The published price is A$399 for Self-Study or A$449 for eLearning, before tax. It includes the official PECB course materials, 12 months of access, the first exam attempt, one free retake, and the certification application fee. PECB’s partner-course policy also includes the first year of the Annual Maintenance Fee where maintenance applies; Foundation and Provisional credentials are maintenance-exempt. There is no separate first-exam or certification-application charge after enrolment.

What will PECB charge to maintain the ISO 42001 Foundation credential?

No ongoing PECB maintenance fee or CPD submission is required for a Foundation credential. PECB’s current maintenance policy lists Foundation, Provisional, and Transition credentials as maintenance-exempt.

Can I pay in NZD or another currency, and when is Australian GST added?

Yes. Every Academy course supports AUD and multiple local currencies, including NZD, USD, SGD, GBP, EUR, INR, AED, MYR, PHP, IDR, and VND when a live quote is available. Currency and tax are separate: an Australian billing address adds 10% GST, while a non-Australian billing address has no Australian GST. For example, an Australian working in New Zealand may pay in NZD and use an Australian billing address, but 10% GST will still be added because the billing address is Australian.

What is the difference between Self-Study and eLearning for ISO 42001 Foundation?

Self-Study costs A$399 before tax and uses the official PECB slide-based materials. eLearning costs A$449 before tax — A$50 more — and adds recorded trainer-led lessons and interactive learning activities. Both routes lead to the same PECB exam and credential, and both include the same exam package. Choose eLearning if explanations and video guidance help you learn; choose Self-Study if you are comfortable working through standards-based material independently and want the lowest price.

Can I sit the ISO 42001 Foundation exam remotely from New Zealand or another time zone?

Yes. PECB publishes remote online exam sessions that candidates can take from home or another suitable location through the PECB Exams application. The published course record lists these exam facts: duration — 1 hour; format — Multiple-choice; assessment — 40 multiple-choice questions worth 100 points in total, across 2 competency domains — the fundamental principles and concepts of the standard, and the management system requirements themselves. Each question has one correct answer and two distractors; pass mark — 70%; language — English (other PECB languages available on request). New Zealand candidates should choose a published session that suits their local time, meet PECB’s identity and technical requirements, and complete the system check before exam day. PECB’s general exam policy does not publish a New Zealand restriction.

Which credential tier will I receive after the ISO 42001 Foundation exam, and who assesses it?

On passing, you become a "PECB Certificate Holder" in the Foundation credential for that standard. No professional experience required — Foundation is the entry-level PECB qualification. A Foundation certificate does not require professional experience or project hours. After you pass, PECB processes the applicable certificate requirements.

What evidence does PECB accept for the experience or project hours for ISO 42001 Foundation?

No project or audit hours are required for the Foundation credential, so there is no project-hour evidence to submit.

Can I become both a Lead Implementer and a Lead Auditor?

Yes. You can hold both the ISO 42001 Lead Implementer and ISO 42001 Lead Auditor credentials. They are separate, complementary certifications: Lead Implementer demonstrates that you can build and operate the management system, while Lead Auditor demonstrates that you can audit and verify it. To earn both, complete each course, pass each exam, and apply for each credential. PECB assesses implementation-project experience for the Implementer tier and audit experience for the Auditor tier separately. If you pass an exam before meeting its full experience requirements, you can receive the applicable Provisional credential and upgrade later when those requirements are met; you do not need to retake that exam. Neither credential automatically grants the other.

/ Career signal

What is the ISO 42001 Foundation certification worth?

A recognised AI governance credential — first to market

PECB ISO 42001 Foundation tells a hiring manager you understand the world’s first international management system standard for Artificial Intelligence. As AI procurement questionnaires become routine in Australian enterprise and government tenders, demand for staff who can speak the language of AI governance — risk treatment, human oversight, model lifecycle, supplier diligence for AI vendors — is outpacing supply. Foundation is the lowest-friction way to put a credentialled AI governance signal on a CV.

Where it shows up in Australian job descriptions

AI Governance Lead, Responsible AI Manager, AI Risk Analyst, AI Compliance Officer, AI Ethics Lead, Privacy and AI Counsel — roles that did not exist in their current form 24 months ago are now being hired in Australia at consistent pace. SaaS companies shipping AI features, government agencies operationalising the DTA AI policy, healthcare and TGA-regulated vendors, and APRA-regulated entities using algorithmic decisioning all list ISO 42001 awareness as a competitive advantage.

The natural prerequisite for the Lead pathway

Foundation is not a substitute for Lead Implementer or Lead Auditor — it is the on-ramp. The AI Annex A control vocabulary, the AIMS lifecycle, and the relationship to ISO 27001 (information security) and ISO 27701 (privacy) are assumed knowledge in every Aegentra Lead course. Many Foundation alumni progress to Lead Implementer within twelve months, often once they are assigned to a real AI governance programme.

It pairs well with adjacent credentials

Foundation stacks with ISO 27001 (information security), ISO 27701 (privacy — particularly when AI processes personal data), ISO 9001 (quality management), and emerging AI assurance frameworks (NIST AI RMF, EU AI Act-aligned schemes). For practitioners building a credential portfolio in AI governance, Foundation is the cheapest internationally recognised AI-specific entry point.

/ Where this lands in Australia

ISO 42001 Foundation training in Australia — who hires it

SaaS companies shipping AI features

Foundation-credentialled staff on the account and solutions-engineering team reduce the volume of AI-specific escalations to security and product during enterprise procurement. For SaaS companies pursuing the organisational ISO 42001 certificate, Foundation is the minimum literacy for engineers and product managers contributing to the readiness programme.

Government AI users and suppliers

The DTA Policy for the responsible use of AI in government (2024) puts AI governance squarely inside Commonwealth procurement. State governments (NSW AI Assurance Framework, Victoria) follow similar lines. Suppliers building or embedding AI for government use Foundation as the minimum literacy for staff producing AI governance evidence in tenders.

Healthcare and TGA-regulated medical AI

Software as a Medical Device using machine learning is regulated by the TGA. Clinical decision-support tools, AI-powered diagnostics, and digital-health AI products all face documented governance expectations. Foundation gives clinical, product, and quality staff the vocabulary to follow AI governance discussions and respond to TGA or ADHA findings without needing a translator.

APRA/ASIC-regulated financial services using AI

AI in credit decisioning, fraud detection, insurance underwriting, and customer-service automation is increasingly scrutinised under CPS 230 (operational risk), CPS 234 (information security), and ASIC guidance on algorithmic decision-making. Foundation is the minimum bar for risk and compliance staff who participate in AI governance reviews.

/ Study plan

How hard is the ISO 42001 Foundation exam?

The exam is closed-book, so plan for recall rather than lookup. Work through these checkpoints before you sit it.

  1. 01Read the ISO/IEC 42001:2023 standard end-to-end at least once. Focus on the AI Annex A controls — these are new to almost everyone and the exam will test recognition repeatedly.
  2. 02Build a one-page diagram showing the AIMS sitting alongside ISO 27001 and ISO 27701, with arrows showing shared management-system structure (Annex SL) and unique additions (model lifecycle, human oversight, supplier diligence for AI).
  3. 03Memorise the four AI lifecycle stages and the typical control families that apply at each. The exam rewards candidates who can place a question precisely in the lifecycle without scanning the slides.
  4. 04Use the practice questions in myPECB to identify weak domains. Foundation covers two competency domains — your score gap on a sample exam tells you where to spend the last six hours of study.
  5. 05Book the exam 7-14 days after finishing the slides — long enough to consolidate, short enough that the material is fresh. Reschedules through PECB are free if you need to move.

How an AI management system gets built

The course teaches the standard; this shows the method applied. Our ISO 42001 implementation record — an illustrative composite scenario rather than a client engagement — works through eight AI governance mistakes we see repeatedly, why the AI inventory has to exist before the policy, and how human oversight is measured rather than asserted. The scope decisions, the impact assessments and the order the work runs in are set out in full.

/ Accreditation

Is the ISO 42001 Foundation certification recognised in Australia?

Yes. PECB certifications are internationally accredited and are accepted on Australian resumes, tender responses and procurement panels. Australia has no separate national licence for ISO 42001 Foundation — the recognition comes from the accreditation behind the credential, which is international.

PECB’s Foundation certificate programs are accredited by ANAB (ANSI National Accreditation Board) under ANSI/ASTM E2659 — the standard for certificate programs. Its professional certifications are separately accredited under ISO/IEC 17024, the international standard for bodies certifying persons, by IAS, UKAS, KAB and COFRAC.

Aegentra Academy is an official PECB authorised training partner in Australia, which is what allows this course to include the official PECB examination voucher rather than billing it separately. You can confirm that directly with PECB through the official PECB partner directory.

This official PECB course is sold and supported by Aegentra Academy. PECB supplies the course material, examination and professional credential scheme. Aegentra's wider practice also runs ISO 42001 AI governance engagements and Microsoft 365 hardening for Australian organisations. Named eLearning trainers are credited separately on this page when the course record supplies them.

Courses run online and self-paced through the myPECB platform, so professionals across Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra and New Zealand enrol online. / Frequently asked

ISO 42001 Foundation — frequently asked.

What does the PECB ISO 42001 Foundation course cover?

Five modules covering the structure of ISO/IEC 42001:2023, the relationship between an AIMS and an ISO 27001 ISMS, the AI lifecycle, the new AI Annex A controls, the integration with ISO 27701 (when AI processes personal data), and exam preparation. Total effort is 8-12 hours of self-paced study.

Is the PECB ISO 42001 Foundation recognised in Australia?

Yes. PECB is accredited by UKAS, IAS and COFRAC under ISO/IEC 17024 for personnel certification — the same accreditation framework JAS-ANZ uses in Australia. The credential is recognised by Australian Commonwealth and state government tenders, financial-services hiring, and certification bodies operating in Australia.

Do I need ISO 27001 before doing ISO 42001 Foundation?

Not required, but helpful. ISO 42001 is structurally similar to ISO 27001 — both follow the Annex SL High-Level Structure. If you have already learned ISO 27001 vocabulary, ISO 42001 builds on it. If not, Foundation is written to be approachable from a cold start.

What AI systems does ISO 42001 cover?

Any AI system the organisation chooses to bring into scope — LLM-powered features, classifiers, recommendation engines, decision-support tools, computer vision, and the data pipelines feeding them. The standard is technology-agnostic; it governs how AI is managed, not which AI technology is used.

How is the Foundation exam structured?

One-hour, multiple-choice, online-proctored. The exam covers two competency domains — fundamental concepts of an AIMS, and AI management based on ISO/IEC 42001. Pass mark is 70%. You receive your PECB digital certificate within a few business days of passing.

What makes the Aegentra Foundation course different?

Every authorised PECB Foundation course leads to the same credential — the certificate is identical wherever you buy it. The differences are price, format, and who supports you. Aegentra delivers Foundation at $399 + GST with the exam, one free resit, and 12 months access included. Aegentra is also an active Australian security and AI governance consultancy, so Academy support is informed by current AIMS practice.

How does ISO 42001 align with the Voluntary AI Safety Standard?

The DISR Voluntary AI Safety Standard (2024) sets out ten voluntary guardrails for organisations developing or deploying AI. ISO 42001 is the certifiable international companion — the guardrails map onto ISO 42001 clauses and Annex A controls. For Australian organisations adopting the Voluntary Standard, ISO 42001 is the most efficient evidence base.

Does ISO 42001 satisfy the EU AI Act?

ISO 42001 is not formal EU AI Act compliance — that is determined by EU regulators. But the Act explicitly references harmonised standards and ISO 42001 is widely expected to be one of them. For Australian SaaS companies selling AI products into the EU, an ISO 42001 certificate is the most credible third-party evidence base for the governance obligations.

Will the Foundation credential help with an AI procurement questionnaire?

Indirectly. Procurement teams typically ask whether the organisation holds the ISO 42001 certificate. What Foundation does is make the staff completing AI procurement questionnaires meaningfully faster and more accurate — they understand the question being asked and the evidence that satisfies it.

What CPD credits do I earn?

PECB awards 14 CPD credits on completion of the ISO 42001 Foundation course. These count toward CPD requirements at ISACA, (ISC)², IAPP, AISA, and other professional bodies on submission.

How long is the Foundation certificate valid?

The Foundation credential does not expire and does not require renewal. The certificate is dated and refers to the ISO/IEC 42001:2023 edition; if the standard is significantly revised in future you may choose to take a refresher course, but there is no mandatory recertification.

Can my employer pay or reimburse?

Yes. Either complete checkout yourself and forward the Stripe tax invoice for reimbursement, or write to Academy@aegentra.com.au and we will issue an invoice direct to your organisation with payment terms. Groups of five or more receive a discount.

When can I start the course?

Immediately after payment. The Academy team confirms your seat with PECB and you receive login details by email — usually within one business day.

How long do I have access to the course?

You have 12 months of access from enrolment. That window covers the course material, the official PECB exam, and one free resit if you need it.

What if I fail the exam?

One PECB-issued resit is included in your enrolment at no extra cost. Aegentra does not publish a pass-rate claim without an audited cohort dataset.
